{"id":471,"date":"2014-05-12T09:57:11","date_gmt":"2014-05-12T08:57:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.economic-truth.co.uk\/?p=471"},"modified":"2014-05-28T11:13:53","modified_gmt":"2014-05-28T10:13:53","slug":"is-a-book-worth-500","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.economic-truth.co.uk\/?p=471","title":{"rendered":"Is a book worth \u00a3500?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When looking to buy a copy of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/gp\/product\/0979387361\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1634&amp;creative=19450&amp;creativeASIN=0979387361&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=economictruth-21\">Newton&#8217;s Telecom Dictionary<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-uk.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=economictruth-21&amp;l=as2&amp;o=2&amp;a=0979387361\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/> I noticed that as well as the standard page on Amazon, there was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/gp\/offer-listing\/B00CAYID08\/?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1634&amp;condition=new&amp;creative=19450&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;tag=economictruth-21\" target=\"_blank\">another page<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"https:\/\/ir-uk.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=economictruth-21&amp;l=ur2&amp;o=2\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/> on which the price was set rather higher, along with a more convoluted title. \u00a0The first time I saw this second page there were in fact three booksellers, all with very high prices:<\/p>\n<p>[table th=&#8221;0&#8243;]<br \/>\nSam Books, \u00a3432.98<br \/>\nGreenpastures UK, \u00a3598.97<br \/>\nUK BOOKDEPOT, \u00a3599.00<br \/>\n[\/table]<\/p>\n<p>Why would these sellers set such a high price for a book that is readily available? \u00a0 Are they hoping that someone may not be able to find the cheaper version, and mistakenly pay \u00a3600?<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In fact, these prices are likely to have arisen from an automated mistake. \u00a0Resellers on Amazon can benefit from being seen as a &#8216;one stop shop&#8217; &#8211; having all types of book available from them, potentially saving customers postage costs and hassle of ordering from unknown retailers. \u00a0However, it is possible that resellers don&#8217;t have stock of everything they offer; instead they rely on being able to order it\u00a0from another reseller should a customer order from them. \u00a0In order to do this, they just need to set the price a little higher than the price charged by other retailers &#8211; to cover postage and charge for the reputation.<\/p>\n<p>This can have odd impacts. \u00a0Michael Eisen noted a case of a book which was <a title=\"Amazon\u2019s $23,698,655.93 book about flies\" href=\"http:\/\/www.michaeleisen.org\/blog\/?p=358\" target=\"_blank\">advertised at over $23million<\/a>, where automated processes had effectively created an infinitely incrementing loop. \u00a0At the time of writing, Amazon UK has a number of books listed at \u00a3999,999,999,997.19, such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/gp\/product\/1864765364\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1634&amp;creative=19450&amp;creativeASIN=1864765364&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=economictruth-21\">Buddha in the Waiting Room<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-uk.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=economictruth-21&amp;l=as2&amp;o=2&amp;a=1864765364\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/> &#8211; a price set this high is likely because nobody has the book in stock, again created algorithmically.
